Promoting Critical Thinking

Just as golf coaches help budding golfers learn new club swings and give feedback on the practice tee, you can take time out of your daily class schedule to initiate explicit instruction about critical thinking skills. In a project, you can follow this explicit instruction with feedback on the quality of their application of the targeted thinking skill. Yes, students could learn the skill in the project without formal instruction. Formal instruction, however, speeds the learning of the thinking skill, ensures that students are using the skill correctly, and enables students to use the skill more effectively in the project.
